During hostile action with Indians in the Pinito Mountains, Sonora, Mexico, Powhatan Clarke dashed among the howling Apaches and, at the peril of his own life, snatched from the Indians a wounded corporal they were holding. He then carried him to safety, though continually exposed to heavy enemy fire.
Powhatan Clarke graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1884.
