4 Medals of Honor are Accredited to South Dakota

During the Indian Campaigns 28 Medals of Honor were awarded for action "on the ground" in South Dakota.
During World War II Marine aviator Joseph Foss became the first fighter pilot to equal the record of World War I "Ace of Aces" Eddie Rickenbacker. Foss went on to serve his home state after the war as its Governor.
Vietnam War helicopter pilot, South Dakota-born Patrick Henry Brady went through three helicopters in one day, each so badly shot up that it could no longer fly, to extract 53 wounded soldiers under conditions so bad no other pilots could reach the desperate troops.
