Thank you for your invitation to participate in the "Hall of Heroes" website campaign, dedicated to the history and heritage of the Medal of Honor.  While Department of Defense regulations and policies preclude senior officials from endorsing commercial activities, I am pleased to join my fellow citizens in discussing the meaning of the Medal of Honor through your open web page.  Accordingly, my comments are enclosed.

The Medal of Honor

A Grateful Nation Honors Its Heroes

Thank you for the opportunity to salute the magnificent soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coastguardsman, as well as the civilians who have received our Nation's highest award for valor.  We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to each of them for the conspicuous gallantry, unwavering intrepidity, and selfless dedication they displayed in defending freedom.

All Americans are indeed fortunate to live in a land of opportunity, freedom, and hope.  We must always remember, however, that the price our forefathers--and our veterans--paid for these liberties was enormously high.  Throughout history, Americans have met the challenges of their day and protected this Nation with their lives and treasure--and none have done so with greater devotion than those represented here.

Today, America's sons and daughters in uniform continue this great legacy of service and sacrifice.  They are on duty around the world, carrying out the dangerous and difficult business of defending freedom and democracy.  America must not take them for granted.  They have truly earned the respect and appreciation of a grateful Nation.

General Henry H. Shelton became the fourteenth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on October 1, 1997.  He has risen from his commission as a second lieutenant in 1963 to our Nation's highest ranking military officer through hard work and dedication.  The former Green Beret served two tours of duty in Vietnam (with both the 5th Special Forces Group and the 173rd Airborne Brigade) and in 1994 commanded the Joint Task Force that conducted Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti.  Before his appointment to the Joint Chiefs of Staff he had served as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Special Operations Command.

General Shelton's awards include:  The Defense Distinguished Service Medal (with 2 oak leaf clusters), Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with oak leaf cluster), Bronze Star Medal with "V" device (and 3 oak leaf clusters), and the Purple Heart.  He has also been awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Pathfinder Badge, Air Assault Badge, Military Freefall Badge, and the Special Forces and Ranger Tabs.
