Entered Service in the US Army from Concord, NH

Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism July, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA

Died:  December 15, 1921 at the age of 78

In the siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana, several Black soldiers were tasked with undermining the enemy's works by digging a trench under the rebel fortifications. Private William Tabor was one a group of sharpshooters assigned to protect these workers, who came under constant bombardment by enemy grenades. In the first attempt at such bombardment, short fused shells were dropped over the rebel works to fall into the ranks of working soldiers, killing 125 men engaged in shoveling sand to create the trench. Just as the rebels prepared to drop a second shell through the trough, Private Tabor jumped up on the sandbags, slipped a noose around the trough, and jerked it into his own lines with the effect of rebounding the shell into the enemy ranks. In order to perform this feat which saved many lives and caused numerous casualties to the enemy, Private Tabor willingly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire, but successfully completed his mission without being wounded.
