Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism July 03, 1863 at Gettysburg, PA

Died:  June 20, 1870 at the age of 39

Private Bernard McCarren was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the final day of that battle his unit was in a position behind the stone wall to the right of the Angle and engaged in heavy fighting. Because of their location, the soldiers of the 1st Delaware Infantry found themselves facing the brunt of both Pickett's and Pender's Divisions. When the enemy charge was repulsed, many of the Union defenders rushed out onto the battlefield to capture the retreating rebels. Among those pursuing the defeated enemy soldiers was Private McCarren, who in that action captured the flag of an unidentified Confederate regiment.
