Entered Service in the US Army from Marshfield, VT

Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism February 02, 1864 at Newport Barracks, NC

Died:  July 23, 1917 at the age of 80

On February 2, 1864, Confederate General Martin attacked Newport Barracks, North Carolina, which was defended by fewer than 750 Union soldiers with but a single gun. The 2,000-man rebel force with fourteen guns and 400 cavalrymen quickly pushed the Union forces back in a retreat across the river. First Lieutenants Erastus Jewett, Josiah Livingston, and Theodore Peck valiantly led parties in efforts to delay the charging rebels and burn the bridges, thereby stalling the enemy advance. All three officers earned Medals of Honor for their heroic actions that enabled most of the soldiers under siege at Newport Barracks to escape across the river, and then denied the advancing Confederates a convenient crossing to pursue them. Upon firing a railroad bridge, Lieutenant Livingston noted that Sergeant Charles Branch had fallen wounded and, despite continued enemy fire and immediate pursuit, returned to the flaming bridge to carry the sergeant to safety.
