Earned The Medal of Honor During the Civil War For heroism January 14, 1864 at Crosby's Creek, TN

On January 14, 1864, Confederate General Robert Vance captured a wagon train carrying Union supplies at Sevierville, along with 200 Union soldiers and numerous local civilians. While in pursuit of General Vance, Colonel William Palmer detailed a party of twenty men to charge through the enemy's rear. Their assault surprised the Confederates and resulted in recapture of the supplies. Sergeant Everett Anderson was detailed to look for the wounded, scattered in the area, and while dismounted to perform this mission, noted the approach of five men. Mounting his horse, he wheeled about to find himself facing General Vance, two aides, and two orderlies and commanded them to surrender. General Vance demanded to be taken by an officer, but at the persistence of Sergeant Anderson who covered the small group with his weapon, finally threw down his revolver and submitted to Sergeant Anderson. Single-handedly, the Sergeant, while separated from his unit, had captured the Confederate general and guards, and marched them back to his own commander.
