TAPS
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, good night. |

Two days after
the historic and tragic battle at Wounded Knee Creek, South
Dakota, fifty-three men of the Sixth Cavalry escorted a supply
train to the regiment's camp at the site of the battle. As the
train prepared to cross the partially frozen White River on the
route of their march, they were engaged by a force of 300
Indians. Six men earned Medals of Honor in the engagement that
followed. Captain John Kerr commanded his troop in action
against the Indian force on the north bank of the river,
defeating an enemy force that vastly outnumbered his own and
preventing the renegade party from entering the sanctuary of the
Bad Lands.
