TAPS
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky,
Gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh,
Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, From the hills,
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Then good night, Peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn
Shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear,
Friend, good night. |

The U.S.S.
Tallapoosa served as a dispatch vessel until sunk off Vineyard
Haven, Massachusetts, on August 21, 1874 in a collision with the
schooner James S. Lowell. Fireman First Class David Harrington
was one of three sailors who received Medals of Honor for their
heroism in that tragic sinking. Fireman First Class Harrington
remained at his post of duty in the fireroom until the fires
were put out by the rising waters. He opened the safety valves
when the water was up to his waist.
His comrades, Fireman Second Class John MaGee and Master At Arms
August Ohmsen also received Medals of Honor for their heroism in
this action.
