More than a quarter-million Americans (as well as a few distinguished foreign nationals) are buried on the 612 acres of rolling hills above the Potomac River called "Arlington". Only Calverton National Cemetery near Farmingdale, NY provides a final resting place to more Americans. Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) is one of more than 100 National Cemeteries, but is one of only two that is administered by the U.S. Army. All others, with the exception of Soldiers' and Airmens' Home in Washington, D.C., are administered by the National Park Service or the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Interred at Arlington are veterans of every war in our Nation's history including the American Revolution, and members of every branch of service. Resting among those who have so valiantly served the cause of freedom are US Presidents (2), Supreme Court Justices, astronauts, and other great leaders from our distinguished history. Arlington is also the final resting place of The Unknown Soldiers.
Each year nearly 5 million visitors pass through the cemetery's Visitors' Center, to walk or ride through history among the stones that call to mind heroes like Audie Murphy, Arthur MacArthur, and others. Special memorials also adorn the grounds including the Custis-Lee Mansion, usually called Arlington House, the recovered mast of the USS Maine, the eternal flame marking the grave site of President John Kennedy, and the 5,000 seat Memorial Amphitheater. The President sends four wreaths to Arlington each year on:
May 29th (The birth date of President John F. Kennedy who is buried at Arlington)
Memorial Day
September 15th (The birth date of President Howard Taft who is buried at Arlington)
Veterans Day
As an American Shrine, many people do not realize that Arlington is still an operational cemetery, conducting an average of 15 funerals each day. American heroes are reverently laid to rest with full military honors, often being borne to their final resting place by caisson, as Arlington is the one remaining cemetery in America authorized to use horses as a regular part of the ceremony.
A total of 384 Medal of Honor Recipients are interred or memorialized at Arlington National Cemetery. (This number does NOT include the Unknown Soldiers, each of which is also a Medal of Honor recipient.)
